Somalia, located in the east of Africa, has experienced decades of war, with violence affecting thousands of Somali citizens.
Many have experienced the trauma of sexual violence and forced recruitment into militia groups, with devastating consequences for mental health and overall well-being.
A programme in mind-body wellness has taken off in the country’s capital Mogadishu, where trauma survivors practice modified yoga to supplement traditional counseling.
The programme, which targets women who have experienced sexual assault, is structured into classes where attendees practice breathing exercises, meditation and yoga exercises to assist in their counseling.
Although women cannot completely forget their experiences, the programme provides a safe space for healing and tools to assist in the recovery process.
